A Story on Career + Success

This is a story about my mom and her career.

My mom is one of the smartest people I know. She can have a conversation with anyone on anything and know a shit ton about the subject. ANY subject. Once I heard her talking about bees like she’d been a damn bee keeper all her life. It’s fascinating and insane.

She used to be an investor when I was little but worked a ton and wasn’t home a lot as she puts it. Skip ahead 16 years and she had my half sister and then my other half sister.

During this time she decided she wanted to be in charge of her own schedule. She wanted to be home more. She didn’t want to be working until 5..6pm each day.

After what she describes as “swallowing her ego” she now cleans houses. She’s had employees under her from time to time but mainly does it herself now. She’s never marketed and it’s all been referral. She’s a very hard worker.

THE BEAUTY BOOST: "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it." -Maya Angelou

This has allowed her to end her working days typically by 1pm or so, pick the type of clients she wants to have, stay VERY in shape b/c she’s moving all the time, make decent money for way less hours and work however many days she wants. She is her own boss.

While she cannot do this forever, she’s done it for years and will continue to do so for a few more I’d imagine. To me this is what success is. When you’re out and people ask the question, What do you do, answering with “house cleaner” isn’t always as glamorous as an investor.

But what also isn’t glamorous is working endless hours to make someone else rich. To not see the people you love more than anything in the world. To be so drained at the end of the day you have nothing to give to anyone.

I think slowly we’re beginning to re-define for ourselves what success means. We just have to “swallow our egos” from time to time and stay true to our gut.

Oh, and if you need a cleaner, message me;)
