The 4 Step Detox Plan…No Juice involved!

January refresh

DETOX: to abstain from or rid the body of toxic or unhealthy substances.

January is that fresh start of the year where we’ve had one too many Christmas cookies, scoop of mashed potatoes and consider taking the dog to pee our workout for the day. In other words, we’re just feeling “blah.”

This is that time when people are looking for the best way to detox the body and/or lose weight; typically in the form of juicing. Juicing is one method to flush out the body but it’s drastic and never a long term plan to lose weight. You only end up taking in less calories, putting the body into shock and can actually decrease your metabolism. Check out Huffington Post’s article on juicing for weight loss, written by a dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics here.

Side note: “I can’t wait to NOT eat today!” -said no one ever.

So what is a less drastic and still effective measure we can take? In reality, the body detoxifies itself naturally, mainly through the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. However, there are still some steps we can do to help move along the process. Check them out below:)

1. Refresh and Relax

Clear your mind from the focus of food for a minute and think about how great you feel after a good night’s rest. Sleep is essential to refreshing and repairing the body.Tip: Try going to bed 15 minutes to 30 minutes earlier each night until you build up to a full extra hour.

2. Move it or Lose it

Not really, but do exercise. Start by literally penciling in your workouts each Sunday for the upcoming week. It’s much harder to skip when you have it planned out. Then just work on exercising 30 minutes a day to start. You’ll increase blood flow, boost your moods, and decrease cortisol (our stress hormone). It’s like a free makeover!

3. Goodbye Junk

Never ever starve the body but begin to replace the “junk” with healthier options. If you want to take this one step further, try eliminating caffeine, alcohol, sugars and dairy for one to two weeks. Tip: Go one week without eating frozen or packaged food. Have fun with it and try some new, fresh recipes.

4. Drink, Drink, Drink…

Water that is. Cut out all the crap and just drink a lot of water. If you’re one of those strange people like my friend Amber who “doesn’t like water,” then add a little pizzaz to it. Try adding lemons, infuse with fruit, mash up blueberries + raspberries, or throw in a splash of cranberry.
