Get to Know the Cano Family of Waxing the City!
We are the Cano family: Jessica, Chris, Lelia, and Henry, the owners of the first Waxing the City Studio in Ohio.
The studio in Shawnee Hills is the first of several more that we are bringing to the Columbus market. We love this brand because it’s all about opportunity!
Founders Summer and Alex were Estheticians who created an amazing opportunity for their peers with a unique experience within the industry. We get to pick up the baton and create opportunities for women in our community to do what they love and make a great living. We also get to show our kids that they can create opportunities by following their passions!
We never thought that we would own a business, but now we can’t imagine life without it. We get to see the change in the community around us, and the opportunities it creates for our team.
Why I Started:
We started this because we wanted to have more control over our lives, and we wanted to create more time with our family. Jessica is a lawyer and Chris was the COO of a local company, and those careers really put a strain on the time we had with our family. We chose a franchise that was well established with great support so that we could ensure we never lost sight of why we got into this.
What I love about being a business owner:
We love having the ability to make the best decisions for our team and our community. Everyone who has worked for someone else has questioned how a decision benefited the team or the people connected to the business. Now we get to build an organization that may make a little less money for the owners, but creates real impact in the lives that it touches.
What type of an impact do you hope to have on those you meet and / or purchase your products?
We hope that everyone who visits Waxing the City leaves feeling as confident as our daughter. Beauty creates confidence you can build on every day, and this lifestyle brand helps everyone feel their best with every visit.
Who or what inspires you?
Since we started this journey, I think we’ve both become inspired by the change we see in our daughter. Recently she attended a Women in Business dinner with Jessica, and at the age of 11 was networking and discussing the business in a room full of adults as if she was the owner. That’s a powerful feeling as a parent, and it drives you to want to create that, for not only her, but for others like her. That confidence is truly transformational.
What is your favorite piece of advice that you’ve ever received or quote?
Lately, it’s been that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. We all suffer from imposter syndrome, so it’s easy to find a reason to talk ourselves out of things. We’ve learned to put ourselves out there, engage with our community with the understanding that we are adding value. The community has been so supportive, and in many cases all we have to do is ask……
What does Beauty mean to you?
Beauty means confidence. Everyone has a different definition of what beauty means to them, but when you feel beautiful you are confident. That confidence is a superpower everyone needs!
What advice would you give your past self just starting your business?
Start today! Heck, start yesterday. Don’t worry about all the things that could go wrong. Nothing will ever be perfect. Just start!
