HER STORY ⟡ Katelynn Smith

Hi, I’m Katelynn Smith—founder of Velvet Armor Society, licensed private investigator, certified firearms instructor, armed security professional, and a woman who believes capability changes the way you move through the world.

For more than 16 years, my career has existed in spaces most women never see firsthand. I began in the criminal justice system working with adults on felony probation, including violent and non-violent offenders, individuals with complex mental health needs, and sex offenders. I later moved into specialized gang work with gang-involved youth. Over the years, my work and training expanded beyond the justice system and into private investigations, executive protection, armed security, firearms, emergency medical training, and personal safety.

Along the way, I realized something: Women are constantly told to be careful. Very few are actually taught how to be capable. That realization became Velvet Armor Society.

HOW I STARTED

Velvet Armor Society didn't begin because I wanted to create another self-defense company. It began because I saw a gap. Throughout my career, I had access to training and knowledge that fundamentally changed the way I moved through the world. I learned firearms, medical skills, situational awareness, how to recognize potential problems, and how to make decisions under pressure.

But much of that training happened in environments that were overwhelmingly male. Those experiences were invaluable to me, but I started thinking about all the women who would never voluntarily walk into those rooms, the woman who wants to learn how to shoot but feels intimidated by the range, the mother who wants to know what to do if someone she loves is badly injured, or the woman who has built a beautiful life but has never been taught how to protect it.

I realized women didn't need watered-down training. They needed a different doorway into it.

I wanted to create a place where women could learn serious, practical skills without feeling like they needed to change who they were to belong.

That idea became Velvet Armor Society.

WHAT IS VELVET ARMOR SOCIETY?

Velvet Armor Society is a women-centered capability company built around one core belief: Capability is the new luxury. VAS brings together education and experiences in personal safety, situational awareness, firearms, emergency medical skills, preparedness, and real-world decision-making. But what makes Velvet Armor Society different is how we approach it.

I don't believe preparedness needs to be rooted in fear. And I don't believe becoming capable requires a woman to trade femininity for toughness. You can love beautiful things and know how to stop a bleed. You can wear heels and know how to shoot.

You can build the company, raise the babies, travel the world, order the champagne…and still know exactly what you're capable of when life doesn't go according to plan.

That's the intersection of velvet and armor.

Velvet represents the life you've built.

Armor represents your ability to protect it.

Softness and strength.

Femininity and competence.

Luxury and capability.

You don't have to choose.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OWNING A SMALL BUSINESS?

Building Velvet Armor Society has given me the opportunity to take everything I've learned throughout my career and turn it into something that can change the way women see themselves. My favorite moment is watching a woman do something she wasn't sure she could do.

It's the smile after she fires her first rounds. The confidence after mastering a new skill. The moment she realizes, "Wait, I can actually do this." Because something happens when a woman proves to herself that she can do something that once intimidated her. That confidence rarely stays on the range.

She begins questioning what else she's been unnecessarily afraid of. That's bigger than firearms. That's capability. I'm not interested in creating fear. I'm interested in creating capability. And getting to build a company around that mission is incredibly meaningful to me.

HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?

I think about the woman who hasn't found us yet. The woman who wants to learn but doesn't know where to begin. The woman entering a new season of independence. The mother who wants the skills to protect the people who can't protect themselves yet. Or simply the woman standing outside a room thinking, "I don't know if I belong in there."

I've been her.

I know what it feels like to walk into spaces where you're inexperienced, intimidated, or one of the only women in the room. You walk in anyway. You take the class. You learn the skill. You get uncomfortable. And eventually, something that once intimidated you becomes something you're competent at. That's why one of the ideas at the heart of VAS is having the audacity to become the woman you know you want to be. You don't become capable by waiting for confidence to arrive. You build capability, and confidence follows.

HOW CAN PEOPLE PARTNER WITH VELVET ARMOR SOCIETY?

There are several ways to become part of The Society. Women can join us for Velvet Armor Society experiences and events, book private firearms instruction, schedule personal or home safety consultations, and attend future workshops and range experiences. I also love partnering with businesses and professionals whose work aligns with our mission.

Velvet Armor Society was never intended to be just a class a woman takes once. I'm building a community. A place where women can continue developing skills, trying things that intimidate them, meeting other capable women, and becoming increasingly confident in their ability to navigate the world.

WANT TO SCHEDULE AN EVENT?

Absolutely.

Velvet Armor Society can create private experiences for women's groups, businesses, professional organizations, corporate teams, and community groups. Experiences can be tailored to the audience and can cover topics including personal safety, situational awareness, firearms education, emergency preparedness, medical fundamentals, home safety, and travel safety.

Whether it's an approachable girls' night centered around personal safety or a more intensive hands-on capability experience, the goal remains the same: Give women practical knowledge they can actually use.

CONNECT WITH VELVET ARMOR SOCIETY

If you've ever caught yourself saying, "I've always wanted to learn how to do that..." Consider this your invitation. You don't need experience. You don't need to already feel confident. You don't need to look, dress, or act a certain way. Come exactly as you are. We'll build the capability from there. Because women deserve more than simply feeling safe. They deserve the skills, confidence, and competence to know they can handle themselves when it matters. They deserve to be capable.

Capability is the new luxury.
