HER STORY ⟡ Holly Skinner
Hi everyone!
My name is Holly and I am a recent Asheville transplant who moved to Asheville in November 2023 from Arkansas. I live here with my rescue dog, Blossom, and my partner, Colby. I was drawn to Asheville after traveling here in October 2023. I fell in love with the people, the beautiful surroundings, and the robust live music scene.
Why I Started?
I am the owner and founder of Skinner Solutions, a company I started in 2019. After receiving my Masters degree in Hospital Administration, I worked for 7 years in the hospital setting and then the private practice space. What I quickly realized in my work is that there were many providers who wanted to be out on their own- and not part of a larger healthcare system- but they were intimidated by this move. I heard time and time again “I didn’t take any business courses” or “I don’t know how to run a practice”.
This need stood out to me because I am the daughter of a private practice pediatrician and I spent my whole life watching him navigate through the challenges of running a private practice. Luckily for him, he had my mom who handled the “business side” of things so he could focus on patient care. However, not all providers are this fortunate to have a built in office manager!
That is where I realized I could step in! Launching Skinner Solutions, my goal was to empower healthcare professionals to be able to take the leap into private practice- knowing they could focus on patient care while my team and I handled the rest!
I launched in 2019, while still working full time in my hospital administration job. However, the demand for my services quickly grew and my clients were referring to me more and more! This allowed me to leave my fulltime position after just 4 months and pursue Skinner Solutions as my full time gig!
Skinner Solutions just celebrated its 5th year in business and now has over 11 team members and we support over 30 clients through administrative and insurance billing support services.
What I love about being a business owner:
I love that I can empower providers to have the life they dream of, while providing excellent patient care. With the support of the Skinner Solutions team, they can focus on high quality care while we handle the administration and billing pieces of the practice. I also love the ability the business gives me to set my own schedule and travel- as long as I have wifi, I can work!
What type of impact do you hope to have on those you meet?
My goal is to encourage and empower healthcare providers. Private practice IS POSSIBLE with the right support. I also strive to improve the patient experience for the clients of our providers, by providing top notch admin and billing support services. We become an integrated part of the clinics we support and I love forming those meaningful relationships!
Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by the providers I work with daily. The American healthcare system is very broken and it is an honor to work with providers who still deeply care about their patients and want what is best for them. I am also inspired by my parents who modeled entrepreneurship my entire life and made it seem possible for me too!
What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve ever received or favorite quote?
“Everything is Figureoutable” by Marie Forleo. It’s so true! Yes, running a business is hard but there is nothing that is impossible. If you want to learn and work hard, everything is figureoutable!
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty to me means being authentic. The most beautiful people are those who are true to themselves and not afraid to be who they truly are!
What advice would you give your past self just starting your business?
Keep going! Yes, it is hard but it is so worth it. Also, build a community of support. You can’t do everything alone, and you don’t need to!
